DNI Awards National Intelligence Distinguished Service Medal to Former NCTC Director
Director of National Intelligence Mike McConnell is pleased to announce that retired Vice Adm. John “Scott” Redd, former director of the National Counterterrorism Center, has received the National Intelligence Distinguished Service Medal for his exceptional contributions to the Intelligence Community and defense of the nation.
Director McConnell presented Redd with the award – the highest granted by the DNI – at a Nov. 9 ceremony held in Redd’s honor at Bolling Air Force Base in Washington, D.C.
“Scott Redd has devoted his life to serving his nation,” the DNI said at the event, which attracted several other heads of IC agencies, including FBI Director Robert Mueller; CIA Director Gen. Michael Hayden; Vice Adm. Robert Murrett, director of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency; and Scott Large, director of the National Reconnaissance Office.
Redd also received at the ceremony other awards from IC partners, including the Central Intelligence Agency, the Defense Intelligence Agency, and the NGA.
His career in the Navy and as a senior U.S. Government leader spanned more than 40 years. As the inaugural director of the NCTC, he vastly improved the nation’s capacity to perform counterterrorism analysis and share information among departments and agencies. Under his leadership, the center developed the National Implementation Plan for the War on Terror to help focus U.S. efforts.
The National Intelligence Distinguished Service Medal is an honorary award that recognizes “sustained, selfless service of the highest order and/or extraordinary and long-lasting contributions to the Intelligence Community and the United States by an individual in a position of great responsibility.”
