Retirees have one less thing to remember when renting a car: their discount.
AARP, the lobbying group for senior citizens, has just launched the first combination membership/credit card with Chase. And people who use it to rent an Avis car will automatically get their members' discount."One of the things that's important to our members is the discount.
"They wanted it in a really simple way," Nina Tiller, AARP's programme manager of loan and credit, tells Observer. "Before, they had to ask for it and book in advance. Now they just have to give the card and they automatically get that discount."
Evidently, this wasn't the easiest thing to set up, and the folks at Chase had to do some fancy engineering so existing Visa cards would register the discount. If only they could get retirees to switch off their left-turn signals ...

Old farts can trim down their wallets as the AARP is now combining its VISA card with its membership card. The jazzed-up card is also sporting new technology to give cardholders automatic discounts at the point-of-sale.
Cardholders simply present their "AARP VISA" at Avis when renting an automobile, and receive an automatic discount. A summary of the discount will be printed on the Avis sales receipt. Avis is the first merchant to join the program and offer the new technology, but additional partners will be forthcoming.
The "AARP Platinum VISA," issued by Chase, offers a full one percent back on all card purchases. Every time cardholders accumulate 2,500 points, they may select their desired reward - $25 cash back or a $25 gift certificate to one of several merchants including gas stations, restaurants, major travel and entertainment providers and other top retailers.
